Have you ever wondered why your great people stay with you? It’s probably not because you are the highest paying employer in the region… because you are not. It’s not because you have more opportunities for promotion than anyone else they could work for… because you don’t. Overwhelmingly, I can track employee retention to two ideas: Community and learning. Today, let’s deal with learning.

I’m going to make a guess about the people you have hired into your organization. My guess is that during your hiring process, you screened out all of the applicants who didn’t show initiative and a desire to learn and grow. All of the questions you asked during that screening process ensured that only people with drive and growth mindsets made it into your doors. Good for you.

So, what happens then when you hire in only people who want to learn and grow and have no proven systematic way to grow them? Is any surprise, then, that the data says that over the past 18 years, workers in the millennial generation have changed companies every 3.4 years? Not really… actually, it’s quite predictable.

The old model of employment says that we will supply the employee with respectable pay and benefits and a level of job security if they stay in place over the years. That is a fine model when workers have few choices and jobs are hard to come by. Today, however, there are about 2.1 jobs available for every unemployed person in the country.

Remember, something else has changed as well. We are dealing with the first generations of people who don’t know a world without Google and the internet. They have had access to the combined knowledge of the history of the world in 15 seconds their entire life. They are, by nature, learning entities. They learn when they are getting their oil changed and while they are waiting in the doctor’s office.

If you haven’t considered implementing a simple learning-based growth platform, now is the time. These platforms need not be expensive or complex…just ask my clients. Growth is to this generation of workers what security was for my generation. Your people want to stay with you; let’s show them a path.
